With Oscar Moore on guitar, Johnny Miller on bass and Nat at the piano, the Nat King Cole Trio recorded “Frim-Fram Sauce” in October of 1945. This novelty tune was written by Redd Evans and Joe Ricardel for Nat. The idea of the song is that when you haven’t got a lot of money to spread around, just order items that don’t exist like “frim-fram sauce” with the “aussen fay” and “chafafa” on the side, and then ask the waiter to just bring you a check for the water. The amusing notion was repeated some years later in a song made famous by Louis Prima, “Banana Split For My Baby (And a Glass of Plain Water For Me)”.
